Welcome to our world
We make the intelligent connections that benefit businesses and people around the world.
We see opportunities where others don’t and encourage our talented teams to work together to deliver innovative customer solutions. We’re one of Africa’s leading banking groups, with a presence in 17 African countries and a further 16 countries outside Africa. Or that we were awarded Best Bank in Africa 2009 from The Banker magazine and Best Investment Bank in Africa for 2009 from Euromoney magazine.
Whether you’re interested in developing a rewarding career in global corporate and investment banking, personal and business banking, or in a specialist area like IT, Risk or Accounting, we have a programme for you.
Our businesses
Join any of our graduate programmes and you'll have the chance to spend some time in the fast-paced environments of a number of our business divisions. Here, you'll start to develop your skills and expertise, as well as building a valuable network of contacts and adding to your knowledge of Standard Bank and the way we work. By the end of the programme, you'll have a good idea of the area of the business you'd like to start your career in.

Life at Standard Bank
Join us and you'll find a challenging, stimulating and enjoyable work environment that encourages you to make the most of your potential. We're a global business with strong African roots and a presence on six continents. This means that, from day one, you could be working on key projects that will have an influence well beyond your own country.
Wherever you're based, you'll enjoy the scope to be innovative and creative, and to contribute and implement fresh ideas. You'll benefit from a strong support structure as you progress through the programme, but we believe in treating our people like adults. So you'll have the freedom to find your own way of developing solutions to achieve your goals. In fact, we won't try to change you into a 'Standard Bank person'. Because if we choose you, it means you already are.
Culture and vision
Step into any of our offices around the world and you'll find a real buzz. They're full of people thinking creatively and connecting with each other to develop unique client solutions. As a leading African bank focused on emerging markets throughout the world, we recognise and respect that diversity is inherent in our markets, our clients and our employees. Our unique heritage has driven a culture where we’re committed to valuing and leveraging diversity by building inclusive work environments that enable all of our people to use their talents and unique skills to contribute to our business success.
Most importantly we recognise that diversity and inclusion mean different things to different people. Whether we’re embracing Transformation in South Africa or celebrating the cultural diversity of our offices around the world, we see our people as individuals, all with the potential to succeed.
We aim to deliver innovative and effective products, services and solutions that meet the needs of our customers. We use our extensive network around the world and diverse access to specialist skills to make sure we help you make the right connections and realize your dreams by changing opportunities into realities. Then by encouraging our people to work together in teams and across businesses, we create pioneering solutions based on trust and integrity. That’s why we’re committed to growing our people and respecting their dignity while helping them to develop to their full potential.

Development plan – CIB and PBB LDP
On these two programmes, we'll help you to make the most of a broad range of development opportunities. With continuous monitoring and feedback to ensure that you're happy with the way your career's developing, we’ll guide you on which skills areas you may need to strengthen.
You'll go through a series of challenging rotations in different business areas. To enhance your professional development, at the end of each rotation we'll review your performance with you. This gives your line managers the chance to rate your performance, as well as giving you the opportunity to assess your experience on the rotation. You'll receive feedback that will inform your own personal development plan, giving you opportunities to improve on areas you need to develop, as well as finding ways to continue building on your strengths.
Similarly it is also important for us to receive your feedback as this will help our business units to continually improve the programmes for the future.
At the end of the graduate programme, your development plan will give a detailed view of your abilities for managers who are thinking about placing you in their business area. They'll be able to see your progression through the programme, as well as your strengths and development areas, and how you've developed them.
Graduate programmes
The criteria needed to enter our programmes and the content of the programmes themselves differ, depending on the programme you choose. This means it's important to read the details carefully and identify which programme's right for your future career ambitions before you apply.
We run a number of challenging and stimulating graduate programmes in specific business areas, in Johannesburg, London, Sao Paolo and Beijing. All of the programmes based in Johannesburg are only open to South African citizens, except the Africa Graduate Development programme, which is open to citizens from the rest of Africa.
Continuous support
Whichever programme you apply for, you'll gain an insight into the bank and the way we work, as well as gaining hands-on, practical experience of our business. You'll also have plenty of support as you progress through the programme. Every graduate trainee is assigned a mentor – this could be a director of our business, a manager or a former graduate. They’ll be able to give you help and advice on all aspects of the programme and your career, from professional coaching to hints on who to get to know. They’ll also help you to start developing a valuable network of contacts that will help you in your future career. So don't be shy about asking them about anything – even if you think it might be a stupid question. Because to us, there's no such thing as a stupid question.
Enjoying ourselves
While we're an incredibly successful business that delivers on its commitments and provides returns for its shareholders, we're careful to guard against arrogance. In short, we get on with doing an excellent job, in the knowledge that we're benefiting our clients, our own business and emerging economies around the world. And when there’s something to celebrate, we certainly know how to enjoy ourselves too.
