Who we are
Mars Africa is part of the AIME (Africa, India and Middle East) division of Mars Incorporated, which is one of the world’s largest food companies. Mars Africa operates from Rosslyn (north of the City of Tshwanee) in Gauteng and Montague Gardens in Cape Town. We are commonly associated with the MARS® bar product, but there’s a lot more to us than chocolate. Mars Africa has three Divisions: Petcare (55% of production), Food (25%), and Snackfood (20%).
We produce some of South Africa's leading pet food brands such as, PEDIGREE® and WHISKAS®. Other brands in this division are: SHEBA®, CESAR®, Perfect Fit®, and KITEKAT®. Our Food Division produces South Africa's heritage brands ROYCO® and OXO®. Our Snackfood business prides itself with global brands including MARS®, SNICKERS®, M&M's®, TWIX®, SKITTLES®, and BOUNTY®.
Principles Quality at Mars Africa is noted by our consistent performance from our manufacturing plants in Rosslyn and Cape Town where the Pedigree®,Whiskas® and Royco® brands are produced. The Rosslyn plant, which has been operational since 1998, has one of the most stringent QC processes based on global standards as does the Food factory in Cape Town. Concerning Responsibility At Mars Africa, we have found the flat structure of management to be ideal in creating an equitable working environment. All Associates feel empowered to engage and be involved with all aspects of the business. The completely open plan working environment where managers and directors work side by side with all other Associates (there are no closed offices) has led to a unique culture of democracy and inclusivity. There are few other corporate offices in South Africa which operate along these lines. Mutuality at our firm may be better understood as the spirit of living our Five Principles which is evidenced throughout the organisation. Mars Africa chose to locate the manufacturing and corporate offices in locations close to everyday communities in more rural locations in order to stimulate the micro-economy and job opportunities – and thus you will find our head office with the manufacturing plant – close to the people we serve. Maximising Efficiency has been a challenge in our first decade of operation. We have needed to develop skills and implement systems and processes which are atypical in the South African environment. The result has been an intense learning curve and in the last year a turn-around for the organisation as we have found optimum levels of operation. Skills development continues to be an area of focus for Mars Africa as we grow, and our commitment to our Graduate Programme and to sponsoring deserving candidates for University education.
Profit helps us to maintain Freedom. Mars is one of the world’s largest family owned corporations. This family ownership is a deliberate choice. Many other companies began as Mars did, but as they grew larger and required new sources of funds, they sold stocks or incurred restrictive debt to fuel their business. To extend their growth, they exchanged a portion of their freedom. We believe growth and prosperity can be achieved another way. At Mars Africa, our freedom allows us to engage with government and stakeholders with a different perspective, offering a truly independent point of view on issues. We are committed to working with our stakeholders, communities and government in delivering our products to the people of South Africa and indeed Africa.
