Why do you do this job? In order for me progress in my career as an individual and to obtain as much experience and exposure in order for me to be the best at what I do it is essential. Furthermore, to qualify as an attorney, an LLB degree does not suffice (sadly) accordingly, one has to serve articles for a period of two years. What training did you receive? Training on drafting opinions; pleadings; advising clients; account management; ethic and practice management; on how to manage time and clients effectively especially if you have a demanding practice; how to build and develop relationships with clients to ensure you’re the “go to” attorney of choice. What happens 9-5? Work work work … sometimes running around (get a good GPS system); drafting agreements; pleadings; consulting and liaising with clients; very rarely photocopying; researching the law and providing opinions. What's the upside? The fact that I am learning as much as possible, and being at a “big” firm, I more than often tend to meet high profile clients or celebrities, it is also advantageous to become aware of certain legal matters before the media has the information and sensationalises same. What personality traits do you think you have that make you good at your job? Passion, drive, enthusiasm, friendly attitude, very polite yet honest with the client. What's the downside? Working late hours can be tiring.. but hey no pain no gain and my folks have always said that nobody ever died because of hard work. Who are your role models or mentors? Role Model: Christine Ramon (SASOL CEO); she is a strong female in a male dominated environment, who balances having a family and an awesome career. Mentors: Mr Modise, our deputy CEO, I am humbled every time I chat to him. Hunter Thyne, my current boss - whose protégé I aspire to be. Do you make enough money? In comparison to most of my friends, yes. What will you do next? Get admitted in 2011 and pursue learning for a BCom degree which will assist as I intend on practicing in a commercial law firm. Learn for the Notary Exam and get admitted as a Notary Public. To learn more about Eversheds, click on the underlined script next to their logo on the A-Z of Employers Listing. |
