A day in the life of...
Why do you do this job? I did my General Social sciences degree at UKZN majoring in Marketing and Psychology after which I did my 4th year honors degree in Marketing. I have a great passion for people and Marketing provides a platform in which one can set out to understand what people want, and then deliver in a way in which it resonates with them, making them feel good about themselves and making as difference to their lives. What training did you receive? My first 3 months at the company were spent in the customer care centre as a customer care consultant. I gained some fantastic experience, in terms of fashioning my understanding of the company and its products, but also having my ear tuned into the customers and the positives and negatives they were experiencing… I’m so grateful for the start I had! It was immensely challenging, but I grew so much from it! What happens 9-5? Wow! Well the nature of Marketing is very unpredictable! No two days are the same! But we’re involved with a large scope of tasks including Strategising, project planning, product development , customer processes, research & testing, branding and budgeting to name a few... Brand management involves liaising and interfacing with many respective departments to ensure that your brand is represented well, and delivers on satisfying customer needs. What's the upside? You get the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of consumers through your brand! You are challenged day to day, in terms of finding a better way… With the nature of the market and fierce competition, being innovative and challenging the status quo is an absolute essential! Marketing is all about the team, and combining creative and strategic thinking of all team members can produce some real exciting output! What personality traits do you think you have that make you good at your job? I love a good challenge and that’s certainly the nature of this position… day to day challenge! It opens up so much opportunity to grow and become excellent at what you do! I believe one never stops learning and for me, I’m only at the beginning of my learning curve  I love people and am passionate about making a difference… one can’t come to work for the sake of…. There needs to be a deep seated purpose behind the work, and at the Unlimited, that purpose is to enrich lives. As brand custodians we are in a position to drive this, as consumers’ lives can shift through the products and services we provide. What's the downside? The only downside I would say is the long hours that can sometimes be required in order to deliver… Marketing is very fast paced… changing from day to day… and thus often we need to adapt to the changing deadlines. Who are your role models or mentors? There are many! In terms of leadership, we have the best of the best! Iain Buchan is a real inspiration! Visionary, strategic and creative, it’s an absolute privilege to be able to work under his guidance on a daily basis! Zack Buchan and the 390 are a strong, dynamic and passionate team; leading from the front and challenging their staff to find a better way every day! Do you make enough money? Yes, The Unlimited have given me the best possible start! It’s amazing to be financially independent at the age of 23. I’m able to make monthly investments and put savings aside to build towards my future! What will you do next? Well, as we so often say here, the opportunities are Unlimited…. The thing I love best about working at the Unlimited Group, is that one is given complete ownership of all that they do! I’ve been involved in a large array of tasks and projects during the course of my term-exciting and ground breaking projects,! I’ve had the privilege of working with some master minds of the industry, who have challenged and encouraged me along the way! This month marks a year that I have been at the company and if I reflect on the growth already taken place in my character, skill sets and overall contributions, the future certainly looks very exciting!
