What formal training/qualifcation did you receive to be able to do this job? I hold a B Comm Degree with a specialization in Human Resource Management and that formed my main formal tertiary ‘training.’ I also attended various courses at work like Excel courses, Arbitration courses, IR courses, Retail Leadership Development Courses among others and also received on the job training when I was a Regional Personnel Manager for the Shoprite Western Cape Division in the various aspects of the Personnel department like in the Payroll department, in IR, in the CCMA and also in store training. What happens in an average day, 9-5? The majority of my responsibilities are recruitment and this can include interviews and making offers to pharmacists and also coordinating the liaison between the employees and the payroll department. I am responsible for the entire HR sphere within the MediRite Pharmacies Division so it means that I have to manage training and development, payroll interaction, Budget maintenance, succession planning, IR, Performance Management among others. So on any one day I can be involved in any of these aspects or more and this can include meeting with various other parties to deal with the topic, for e.g. meeting with the Skills Development Facilitator of the Group to deal with the training and development in MediRite and various other tasks involved. The upside is that no day is the same; I have different challenges coming at me on a daily basis and it allows me never to get bored in my role. I also work for a General Manager who is a Pharmacist himself and he therefore understands the people we work with. I am a people’s person who can empathise with all people and I believe that as a Personnel/HR Manager you must be able to understand your people. I am also very inquisitive and it allows to ask the right questions to be able to understand all aspects of the role and knowledge is power! My ambitious nature also drives me to be better and better at what I do. As the business grows the workload increases but on the upside it allows my scope of responsibility to increase as well. Gerrit Snyman, the Divisional Personnel Manager in the Western Cape who I used to report to and my father, the Reverend Hendrick Pillay who currently head up our church’s denomination in Southern Africa – he is a humble man who taught me a lot about how to have respect for people from all walks of life. Do you make enough money for now? Yes, I think so.
What will you do next?
Why do you do this job? I have a passion for numbers and business. I studied at Stellenbosch University and obtained my B Accounting degree. I then received my Honours BCompt through Unisa. I also passed the first Qualifying Examination (also known as Board 1). On an average day I would be busy with calculating financials or anything that is allocated to me by my supervisor. Since I rotate to the different departments in the company, these tasks can vary from international tax calculations to budgeting to internal auditing, depending in which department I am. I use my tax in the tax department and calculate companies’ taxable income and complete their tax returns. I use my auditing in the internal audit department and do a complete audit on a department. My financial accounting knowledge I use to do calculations and compile the annual financial statements and my management accounting knowledge I use in doing viability calculations and budgeting processes. The rotation to the different departments lets me gain a wider understanding of the whole financial aspect of the company. I am able to learn and apply all the subjects I studied in my daily working environment, which I find very fulfilling. The company is also very focused on their TOPP Trainees passing their exams, therefore I never worry if I would have enough study leave, since you can take more than the prescribed days and just work it back in the form overtime. You should be hard working and willing to learn more. Haven’t found one yet.
